Our Mission
We Are Explorers CIC creates radically inclusive, joyful spaces for LGBTQ+ people — with a proud focus on Neurodivergent communities.We were founded by Jam Hirata-Smith (any pronouns), a Neurodivergent, genderqueer person who, after facing severe mental health challenges and exclusion from mainstream LGBTQ+ spaces, decided to do things differently. When Jam’s efforts to encourage accessibility at a local youth group were met with resistance, they made the decision to create something new — a space shaped by lived experience and inclusion.
What began as a small youth group is now We Are Explorers CIC: a queer, Neurodivergent-led social enterprise supporting people of all ages across Wigan and Bolton. We run social groups, offer one-to-one support, and train schools and professionals on the intersection of queerness and Neurodivergence.We exist because queer spaces often exclude Neurodivergent people — and Neurodivergent spaces often overlook queer identities. But 1 in 4 Neurodivergent people in the UK are LGBTQ+, and we deserve spaces where we don’t have to choose which parts of ourselves to show up with.We build those spaces. Where stim toys are welcome. Where softness is strength. Where being yourself doesn’t come at the cost of burnout or masking.Because we’re not just here to help people survive.
